Business  principles can be applied no matter where you work or what you do. The Bachelor of Innovation Program at University of Colorado Colorado Springs will teach you all these principles and more. The principles learned from our AACSB accredited business school (highest accreditation a school can get) alongside our innovation core where you will gain knowledge from former and present industry leaders will help you to become more innovative and competitive in the job market. Tools gained from this program are grant writing, patent writing, how to work in a diverse and strange environment, how to start and then run a business. You will have the opportunity to not only work and collaborate with a diverse team but then also complete projects for real world clients (including but not limited to CEO’s, local businesses, international businesses, and the government). The business college seeks to prepare students for successful careers and lifelong learning. In addition to the technical competence to be expected of a graduate with a bachelor degree in business, students will develop the critical thinking skills, multifaceted team oriented skills and basic innovation background to ensure that they can effectively compete in the changing career landscape in areas driven by innovation.

Each BI degree is comprised of the major courses, the Innovation Core, a Cross Disciplinary Core, and some general education course.

The Innovation Core is 24 Credits that are geared toward innovation and entrepreneurship; a key component is multi-disciplinary long-term team activities over the sophomore, junior and senior years. Teams are expected to include students from all years and may include graduate students. These teams have a dynamic membership and team member roles will change on a regular basis. An innovation core includes courses on innovation, entrepreneurship, business and IP law, and policy. Students develop an “innovation portfolio” throughout the program that documents and highlights their roles and contributions in these various courses. This unique common core and experiential learning component are part of what makes the Bachelor of Innovation™ family so unique.

Each major includes a per-student choice of a cross-discipline core, which is a coherent collection of 15 credits from one “cross over” area. Students are encouraged to choose their cross-discipline as early as possible in the BI program, definitely before they enter their sophomore year.

Business Core (for non-business degrees) provides a broad coverage of business topics.

Creative Communication Core (for any non-LAS BI major) provides coverage of a variety of communication modes. Courses include both traditional (e.g., oral communication) and non-traditional (e.g., visual arts) communication approaches.

Engineering Technology Core (for non-engineering Majors) provides a broad coverage of engineering and technology.
Globalization Core (for any BI major) provides a selection of courses on globalization issues.It will have a language requirement (passing at the second year level) and a collection of international business/policy courses. Students in this option are encouraged to demonstrate at least 3 months residence in a non-English speaking country, which may be met by one-semester of study abroad. While abroad, involvements in the Innovation team projects will be “virtual,” but will be required.
UCCS is an NCA accredited university. BI degrees have been designed to be consistent with the appropriate specialized accreditation guidelines of AACSB or ABET. The College of Business is AACSB accredited so the BI in Business carries that automatically. The BI in CS and the BI in EE are both ABET accredited. (These are the only fields in engineering for which ABET offers accreditation.)



The BI Degree allows students to fulfill all requirements and then go above and beyond by teaching them the tools to succeed in the working industry by cutting back on electives and general core.

Working with Alison Brown, a local serial entrepreneur, a team of eight BI students are building technology and business models for  a non-profit company using GPS and GSM technology for tracking and training pets. Students have been working on actual phone software, GPS components, dog collars, and the business modeling and e-commerce web-setup. Wuffit technology underwent field trials in December 2009, and the company is now taking pre-orders as the units are being manufactured in bulk. Value Innovation
BI teams have been working with Value Innovation (Vi) for 2+ years, and this relationship has been mutually beneficial. An innovation team helped Vi with production of a book on value innovation, and was paid for part of their effort. April-June 2009 BI partnered with Vi on an National Science Foundation (NSF) Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) grant proposal and helped win $150,000 to develop an innovation toolkit. In Spring 2010, another innovation team helped Vi build simulations/games to teach key value innovation concepts, while another team helped implement other tools as web-based software-as-a-service. They helped convert material from Value Innovation Seminars into a books, which is now for sale by the company.
