Why the BI Degree will prepare you for the unknown.

Sony played this at their executive meeting this year.  It is amazing…! It does a great job art explaining facts we push in BI:  Being Innovative, preparing for the unknown, seeking a Blue Ocean and embracing innovation.

Are They Really Saying That Innovation dead?

If you need some extra kudos then let me know what you think as a 50 word comment below:

Recently an article came out which I have a link for at the bottom but the premise is this:  Some supposedly smart people from CNN and Fortune Magazine who collectively write an Innovation themed blog at Brainstorm Tech suggest that technological innovation has been stalled since the late 90s when we witnessed computer hardware, software and telecommunications morph into one innovative glob of technology.  They say companies are standardization everything, that the refresh cycle of new technologies is so brief that consumers are overwhelmed and sticking with older technologies and that Golden Age of frenetic consumption is over. We must welcome an era of innovation that that will be good for the wallet and the Earth if possible.

Do you agree?

Entrepeurship: Making Innovation Work

We’ve all been learning how in the Bachelor of Innovation we seek Blue Oceans, not Red Oceans and how once we come up with an idea how to efficiently and effectively  implement it.  Here is an article from yesterday that shows how Paul King, a  Carnegie Mellon student, missed his flight because as he headed to the airport in Pittsburgh in 2006 when he suffered an ill-timed communications blackout. His cell phone died — and then realized he still had his roommate’s house key in his pocket. If he didn’t call her to arrange a return, she would be locked out all weekend. But without access to his electronic phonebook, he didn’t know her number.  So he returned to the apartment got his charger, called her and of course missed his flight.  Driving back to the airport he noticed all the ATMs around but no phone charger system! Mmm do I hear BI bells going off?

Read the article (here) and be prepared to discuss in class how exactly he made his innovative idea become a reality.

Recap of The Tebeaux Discussion

Here are the points I went over in class:

  • Why is it important for you to realize that “no one wants to read anything you write”?
  • What documents have you used or seen that contained the characteristics of effective technical writing?
  • Have you developed any documents in your other courses, in a job, or in an internship that used these characteristics?
  • What jobs have you held or organizations have you been involved with that relied heavily on communication to function?
  • In what ways has the writing you have done in the past exemplified these characteristics?
  • How do you think that these characteristics further business goals?
  • Does your writing exhibit the characteristics of effective technical writing? Why or why not?
  • How might you apply these characteristics in your writing?
  • How significant are these characteristics in writing for school?

Waiting For BlackBoard

Sorry for the inconvenience of not being able to setup Blackboard, it seems that with both Blackboard and eCompanion going this semester there is a backlog.  If Blackboard is not setup by the end of the week I will go back to eCompanion.
